There's always one more wound, one more pattern, one more layer between you and the thing you say you want. Any justification for not doing the thing.

And the thing never gets done.

It's your state, darling

A while back I was working with a coach I genuinely rated. I told her straight: I don't think I need more healing. I think I just don't have the execution set up. I get blocked, yes. But I've got the pieces.

She kept coming back with the same answer. It's your energy. It's your state, darling. Again and again and again. If it's not showing up, it's your state. You don't want to hear it, but it is.

Do you know what? She's dead wrong.

Not about everything. About me, in that conversation. Because look at what that framing does. It moves the finish line every time you get near it. Did the work and it's still not showing up? There's a deeper layer. Still not showing up? You don't want to hear it. There's no result you could ever produce that would prove you're ready, because "not ready" can't be disproved. That's not coaching. That's a waiting room with nice candles.

The waiting room is full of us

You know the script. Before you're allowed to begin, you have to be fixed. Heal the money wound. Clear the visibility block. Forgive your mother. Regulate your nervous system. One more course, one more journal prompt, one more modality. Seventeen more books and then you're allowed to live. Apparently.

And look. Healing has its place. I've done the work for years and I'm not taking a minute of it back. Some things genuinely need tending.

But somewhere along the way, "I'm still healing" stopped being a description and became a delay. A very respectable delay. Nobody at a dinner party questions it. It sounds humble. It sounds deep. What it often is, is fear wearing a cashmere cardigan.

I should know. Even earlier this year, if I said no to somebody and genuinely meant the no, I'd feel scared about how they'd react and what they'd think of me. How ridiculous is that. Actually scared. I've woken up from it now though.

Not because I healed the fear. Because I got tired of organising my life around it.

Maybe you're not broken

Here's what I see now, and I wish somebody had said it to me plainly. I kept waiting to feel ready. And while I was waiting, everything I needed was already sitting there. The skills. The experience. The body of work. The pieces.

What I didn't have was the execution set up.

That's not a wound. That's a to-do list.

So let me ask you what I had to ask myself. What if nothing else needs healing? What if you're not broken, just not building yet?

Those aren't the same problem, and they don't have the same cure. One keeps you looking backwards. The other one asks you to start.

Your next era is not waiting for you to be fixed

After twenty years of saying yes when I meant no, and one very long detour through fixing myself, here's what I actually believe:

Your next era doesn't start when you're finished healing. It starts when you decide.

The woman you keep waiting to become isn't waiting for you to be perfect. She's waiting for you to begin. And honestly? She's a lot less interested in your wounds than in what you do on an ordinary Tuesday.

Stop shrinking to fit a life you've already outgrown.

If you want somewhere to start, I've made something for exactly this moment. It's a free personalised report, built from your birth details, and it shows you how you're actually built to lead your next era. Not who you're supposed to become. How you already work.

Want yours? Comment REPORT and I'll send it to you personally.

No healing required. Bring yourself exactly as you are. That's rather the point.

Do the thing. Heal later, if you still need to.

I suspect you'll be too busy living.

Finally Her is a reader-supported publication. Keep the candle.

But notice the deal.

You may care for yourself as long as nobody else has to adjust.

You may rest as long as the work still gets done.

You may have a boundary as long as it is expressed beautifully, calmly and at a convenient time.

You may choose yourself as long as everybody who benefits from you choosing them continues to approve.

That is not freedom.

That is self-maintenance for a woman who is expected to return to service.

The bath is not the problem

The problem is what the bath is being asked to fix.

It cannot fix a life in which your time is treated as communal property.

It cannot fix the role you have become brilliant at playing.

The Reliable One. The Low-Maintenance One. The Convenient One. The woman who can handle it.

You can put her in expensive pyjamas. She is still on call.

And because you are competent, you can become competent at self-care too.

Another list. Another standard. Another optimised routine for recovering from the life that is draining you.

You don't question the race.

You improve your recovery time.

Relief matters.

But relief is not authorship.

The act that doesn't photograph well

Real self-care often looks terrible on Instagram.

It looks like not answering.

It looks like leaving the task unfinished.

It looks like saying, "No, I can't do that," without submitting a supporting dossier.

It looks like somebody being disappointed in you and you not rushing in to manage their experience.

No bath bomb can do that part for you.

Because the thing you need may not be more care.

It may be rebellion.

Not rebellion as theatre. Not burning down your life.

Rebellion is quieter than that, and much harder to fake.

It is refusing the role at the exact moment the role is expected of you.

It is the reliable woman becoming unavailable.

It is the capable woman deciding that capability is not consent.

The rebellion is not that you stopped caring about them.

It is that you finally counted yourself in.

That is why one small no can feel enormous.

Your body reacts as if you have detonated the building.

Was I selfish? Was I difficult? Should I send another message so they know I am still good?

You are not only saying no to the task.

You are saying no to the version of you whose belonging depended on completing it.

A boundary is what happens next

We have made boundaries look very tasteful.

A neat sentence on a cream background.

"No is a complete sentence."

But a boundary is not the sentence.

A boundary is what happens after the sentence, when the other person does not like it.

It is the silence you do not fill.

The explanation you do not keep polishing until your no is comfortable for everyone except you.

Someone may call you changed.

They may be right.

The change is that their disappointment no longer has the casting vote.

The first few times may feel rude, exposed, even dangerous.

That does not make the decision a mistake.

It means you have spent years using other people's comfort as proof of your goodness.

Of course authorship feels dangerous when obedience has been rewarded.

The good girl kill switch

You don't kill the good girl by understanding her.

You kill her authority one decision at a time.

Not in the journal.

In the room.

In the message box where you have typed three paragraphs to defend one word.

Delete the paragraphs.

Keep the word.

No.

The wording matters less than the authorship.

Did you choose it?

Or did the role choose for you?

That is the kill switch.

Becoming a woman whose help is a choice, not an identity tax.

Keep the bath. Keep anything that gives you pleasure.

But stop asking private recovery to solve a public arrangement.

Self-care can soothe the woman who has been performing.

Rebellion lets her resign from the role.

And if your mouth knows the word no but your body still experiences it as danger, the problem is not vocabulary.

That's what we're getting underneath in my free webinar, Stop Saying Yes When You Mean No.

Because the real question was never only:

"How do I say no?"

It is:

Who is making the decision?

You’re Not Bad at Boundaries. Technically.

Actually you say it all the time. To the wrong supplier. To the project nobody bothered to scope. To the meeting that should’ve been an email. To the stranger who asks for five minutes and walks off with forty-five of yours.

So don’t tell me you don’t know what the word means. You know exactly what it means.

But then someone you love is disappointed. Someone at work says, “We really need you on this.” Your mother’s voice drops half a degree. A friend needs help. Again.

A perfectly reasonable request lands at exactly the wrong moment. And you know, you know, you don’t want to do it.

And out it comes. “Of course.”

Done. Committed. Your own answer didn’t even get a hearing.

And look, you probably have the scripts. You’ve maybe practised “No is a complete sentence” in the car. Fine. But in certain moments you’re ridiculously fast at three things. Working out what the other person needs. Calculating what it’ll cost you to disappoint them. And quietly deleting what you want from the list.

That’s a skill. Honestly. You’ve had years of practice.

Your yes doesn’t always look like people-pleasing

Sometimes it looks like leadership. Like being the one who can handle it. It looks like maturity, good judgement, generosity, loyalty, professionalism. Love, even.

Which is exactly why nobody spots it. Including you. From the outside it looks really competent.

So you rearrange your week. You fix the problem. You take the extra work, make the call, calm everybody down, remember the birthday, and translate everyone’s feelings into something the room can cope with.

And then it’s 2am and you’re lying there absolutely furious with people who probably have no idea a decision was even made.

Because as far as they’re concerned, they asked and you said yes.

The no did happen. It just happened in private. And you overruled it before it could get inconvenient for anyone.

When it really counts, your own no stops feeling like enough of a reason.

I know how small this can look. In 2003 I was a lead trainer in Jakarta. I was vegetarian and watching my figure, so at team dinners I’d order an €8 soup while everyone else ordered steak and wine.

Then the bill came. Split equally.

More than once I just said nothing, because I didn’t want to rock the boat. And when I did say something? I got called “cheap.”

So a question about a restaurant bill had turned into a verdict on my character. Over soup.

That’s what “just say no” leaves out. You can know exactly what you want to say and still see the label coming before you’ve even opened your mouth. Cheap. Difficult. Selfish. Not a team player.

Knowing the words is the easy bit. The hard bit is letting your own answer count.

The compliance machine

If you’ve become everybody’s reliable one, compliance almost never sounds like “I must obey.” Nobody talks to themselves like that.

It sounds more like this:

Be reasonable.

Don’t make this difficult.

You can cope.

It’ll be quicker if you just do it yourself.

They’ll be upset.

This is what a good mother / partner / daughter / leader / friend would do.

It’s not that big a deal.

And every single yes, on its own, is defensible. It’s one favour. One more deadline. One dinner you don’t want to go to. One conversation you put off. One decision you tweak so nobody else has to feel awkward.

None of it looks like a disaster by itself.

But you don’t get billed per yes.

You get billed for a whole life.

A calendar full of things you agreed to and never actually chose. A career built around what you were brilliant at carrying, not so much around what you wanted to make. Relationships where everyone can see how useful you are and nobody can quite tell what you actually want. Sometimes not even you.

I call that the Compliance Tax. It’s the time, the attention and the options you give up once keeping things easy for everyone else becomes your default setting.

And after a while, even asking yourself what you want starts to feel like an imposition. Like you’re being a bit much.

“But I chose this”

Okay. Maybe you did.

You chose the job, the marriage, the business, the kids, the responsibilities. The whole life.

You can love those choices and still ask whether every single arrangement around them has to stay exactly the way it is.

So here’s the question I’d actually ask. Am I choosing this now, or am I obeying some old idea of who I’m supposed to be?

A yes can be generous and still be yours. A sacrifice can come from love and still be yours. A responsibility can be heavy and still be yours.

What matters is who gets a say.

Did you choose it? Or did the committee choose it for you?

You know the committee. The Reliable One. The Good Daughter. The Professional. The Convenient One.

And to be fair, they all have excellent reasons. They’ve spent years keeping you included, respected and needed. They helped build the woman people trust.

They just don’t get to make every decision.

You get a seat at that table too. Even when somebody would honestly prefer you didn’t have an opinion.

You can understand the pattern and still repeat it

<a Done the therapy, or the coaching, or both. You know all about attachment and perfectionism and emotional labour and over-functioning.

You could explain your pattern with footnotes.

And you still hear yourself say yes while something in you goes very, very quiet.

Because understanding the machine doesn’t switch it off. Clearly.

What starts to switch it off is catching the decision while it’s happening. The request comes in. You have a reaction. You picture how they’ll react. And then there’s the answer you’re about to give.

That first reaction of yours is information. Listen to it. You can weigh it up against your responsibilities, your values, the consequences, all of it. You might still decide this is a hard yes you actually want to give. No problem. That’s a choice.

But your answer needs a moment where it’s allowed to exist.

Because underneath “How do I say no?” there’s usually a much harder question.

Who am I if I stop being the woman everyone can count on, at my own expense?

You can get so good at adapting that your own preferences start to feel like interruptions. So making room for them feels weird. Even when it’s something tiny.

So start with one you can actually see.

What’s one yes costing you?

Pick something you’ve agreed to this week. An extra task. A favour. Something you said yes to before you’d even looked at your own plans.

Then ask yourself:

What’s this actually going to cost me? Not just the thing itself. Count the prep, the travel, the follow-up and the headspace.

What gets moved or pushed back to make room for it? Be specific.

Now that I can see the cost, would I still choose it?

You might keep it. You might change the terms, ask someone else to chip in, or give a different answer next time.

The point is that the decision stops being invisible. You can see what you’re agreeing to, and what else you’re paying with when you agree.

You don’t have to stop being generous. Or competent. Or someone who cares about other people. All of that stays.

You just get to be in the room when the decision gets made.

The goal is to stop disappearing before you answer.

And then decide.

If this felt familiar, subscribe. It’s free.

I write about the rules we follow, the roles we get rewarded for, and what it actually takes to make a choice that’s really yours.

You’ll get the next essay in your inbox, plus an invite when my live workshop, Stop Saying Yes When You Mean No, opens for registration.
